Ashley’s Advice
Students are often stressed from classes, homework, tests, and commitments to other organizations or sports. Many will not be interested in going to an educational event after studying all day. Hosting a party or dance creates a more relaxed, fun environment which allows your members to interact with each other and draws people from the outside community to come and meet their queer peers, which helps them normalize and understand that, yes, there are many LGBT folks on campus. However, I do recommend having an ‘Information Booth’ somewhere near the entrance that has literature (pamphlets, printouts, etc) about LGBT issues that people can grab on the way in or out. This is also a great place to advertise your email list and upcoming meetings!
